Artist's Philosophy
The thing that makes my situation unique is that this marks the first year that a collection of my works has been on display to the general public.
Now this makes me a rookie in the sense of public display, but it certainly does not reflect a novice approach to creating art. This sense of colour and composition has been honed over many years. A graphic designer by trade, I have produced unique imagery for a long time and like working a camera lens or computer mouse this simply represents another medium to express my creativity.
I don’t apologize to anyone for attempting to express something on canvas, particularly when most people go to school to learn the intricacies of this skill. Fact is, 30 years of working with colour professionally has resulted in a very good understanding of visual relationships and how they can affect those who view these visual experiments. This whole voyage into the world of art is something quite new and my hope is that along the way we discover some pretty neat stuff!
I have dabbled in the world of sports art and though what is captured is not the realism of what the late, Ken Danby has done I have received very favourable response to the works I have done in this area. In fact, one of my works pays tribute to Canadian Olympic Speed Skaters and hangs permanently on display at the Calgary Olympic Speed Skating Oval, a facility that hosts many World Cup events, attended by dozens of countries. I have also done some work with Olympic hockey as the inspiration.
My work is noted for its canvas shape, unique texture and marriage of colour. This is obtained through a variety of textural and paint materials. The thought behind the work involves eliciting an emotional response from the viewer. Sometimes it simply is an expression of capturing a good mood, while at other times it can be dark and foreboding. Art is kind of like life...it is what you make of it at any given moment.
In this particular collection, other than the sport samples shown, there are no items that could be regarded as traditionally recognizable, such as a landscape or object. Instead, what is included are works that put together those unique colours and shapes.
I build my own canvasses, particularly the larger ones and although I have not approached any galleries to carry my artwork, that day will materialize soon.
